Computing
OUR AMBITION FOR EVERY LEARNER:
At Petts Hill Primary School, we would like our children to be the creators of technology and not just the consumers to it and our broad curriculum which provides rich experiences encompassing computer science, information technology and digital literacy reflects this. Technology is everywhere and plays a pivotal part in children’s lives in the 21st century. Therefore, we would like to model and educate our pupils on how to use and manage technology positively, collaboratively, responsibly and safely to support the growth of our children’s social competence. We would also like our children to understand that there is always a choice when using technology and as a school, we utilise a range of technology to model positive use. We recognise that technology can allow pupils to share their learning in creative ways. Our knowledge rich curriculum has to be balanced with the opportunity for children to apply their knowledge, demonstrate creative thinking and risk taking while also becoming skilful computer scientists.
We encourage staff to embed computing across the whole curriculum to make learning creative and accessible. We would like our children to be fluent with a range of tools to best express their understanding and hope by the end of Key Stage 2, children have the independence and confidence to choose the best tool to fulfil the task and challenge set for them.
WHAT WE DO TO ACHIEVE THESE AMBITIONS:
At Petts Hill, Computing is taught in discreet computing lessons and applied throughout the curriculum. The curriculum is planned and delivered through a bespoke curriculum designed to cover the curriculum. It includes:
- Units of work set out clearly outlining learning to be achieved, including vocabulary for all children to master and expected outcomes;
- Discreet lessons where the children are able to develop depth in knowledge and skills over the duration of each topic;
- Lessons which focus on curriculum skills of information technology, digital literacy and computer science;
- Units of work comprised of a series of lessons, which carefully plans for progression and depth;
- Lessons are not always taught in isolation but where possible meaningful linked are made between Computing to other areas of the curriculum
- Access to a wide variety of hardware (laptops, desktops, IPad) and software, allowing them to continually practice and improve the skills they learn, while also becoming proficient, confident users ready for the digital world.
HOW WE MEASURE OUR SUCCESS:
Our Computing curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes
- Pupil discussions about their learning;
- Children are able to understand and communicate the consequences of using the internet and that they are also aware of how to keep themselves safe online.
- Self-assessment completed against set criteria for each unit
- A celebration of learning for each term which demonstrates progression across the school
- Children are digitally literate.
Internet Safety:
Petts Hill Primary takes internet safety extremely seriously. We have an E- Safety Policy that provides guidance for teachers and children about how to use the internet safely. Every year group participates in lessons on e-safety and children understand how to stay safe when using technology.
